The IVC Math Assessment is a 50 question, 60 minute test. Your score on the IVC Math Assessment will be used to determine the first math course you will take here at IVC. Review the Math Assessment preparation material before taking the test to ensure you receive the best possible placement. Placement in a lower level course will increase the number of semesters you will need to achieve your goal.
Math placement scores and course recommendations will be posted to your MySite account within one business day. In order to view placement results in MySite, click on My Information > Matriculation > Placement Info.

English Assessment

IVC uses the College Test for English Placement (CTEP) to assess students' skills in reading comprehension and writing. This assessment test is recommended for native English speakers. The CTEP is composed of 3 tests:

  • Reading Comprehension: 7 reading selections and 35 multiple-choice questions,
  • Sentence Structure and Grammar: 30 multiple-choice questions, and
  • Sentence and Syntax: 40 multiple-choice questions.

Students are given 65 minutes to complete the CTEP, though each test section is timed independently. Students are encourage to review the preparation material below. Placement in a lower level writing course will increase the number of semester you will need to achieve your goals. Students are allowed to retake the CTEP once during the calendar year.

Students who have completed the CTEP may challenge the initial course placement by completing a Writing Sample (paper-and-pencil) administered in the IVC Assessment Center.

Students' English CTEP placement scores and recommendations will be posted to MySite within one (1) business day of completing the assessment. Writing sample results may take up to five (5) business days to score.

In order to view placement results in MySite, click on My Information -> Matriculation -> Placement Info. All students are urged to follow their recommendations.
