Math and English Assessments
Math and English Assessments are offered during a three-hour assessment appointment block. While most students take both the Math and English Assessment in the same sitting, students may choose to take only one assessment during a scheduled appointment. ESL assessments are offered during separate assessment appointments.
Students must have an IVC Student ID Number and a current photo ID to enter the Assessment Center. Acceptable forms of identification include a Driver's License, High School ID Card, IVC ID card, student visa, or Permanent Resident Card. Photocopies and mobile images of IDs will not be accepted. The IVC Math Assessment is a 50 question, 60 minute test. Your score on the IVC Math Assessment will be used to determine the first math course you will take here at IVC. Calculators are not permitted. Review the Math Assessment preparation material before taking the test to ensure you receive the best possible placement. Placement in a lower level course will increase the number of semesters you will need to achieve your goal.
Math placement scores and course recommendations will be posted to your MySite account within one to two business days. In order to view placement results in MySite, click on My Information > Matriculation > Placement Info.
IVC uses the College Test for English Placement (CTEP) to assess students' skills in reading comprehension and writing. This assessment test is recommended for native English speakers. The CTEP is composed of 3 tests:
- Reading Comprehension:
7 reading selections and 35 multiple-choice questions.
- Sentence Structure and Grammar: 30 multiple-choice questions.
- Sentence and Syntax: 40 multiple-choice questions.
Students are given 65 minutes to complete the CTEP, though each test section is timed independently. Students are encourage to review the preparation material below. Placement in a lower level writing course will increase the number of semesters you will need to achieve your goals. Students are allowed to retake the CTEP once during the calendar year.
Students who have completed the CTEP may challenge the initial course placement by completing a Writing Sample (paper-and-pencil) administered in the IVC Assessment Center.
Students' English CTEP placement scores and recommendations will be posted to MySite within one to two business days of completing the assessment. Writing sample results may take up to five (5) business days to score.
In order to view placement results in MySite, click on My Information -> Matriculation -> Placement Info. All students are urged to follow their recommendations.
