English or English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment exam
Students are allowed to retest for English or ESL once during the calendar year. The retest must be a minimum of two weeks after the initial test. Additionally, students may also complete a writing sample once every six months to challenge their results.
Math assessment exam
Students may retest after the very first assessment, but it must be a minimum of two weeks later. Then students may retest, but only once per semester.

The English and Math assessments are designed to assess your math and writing skills. A low score on your assessments may require several semesters of developmental Math and/or English coursework and could increase the amount of time you need to spend at IVC in order to complete your degree and/or to transfer to a 4-year university.
We encourage you to take advantage of our challenge options. Challenging your placement does not require that you wait the mandatory re-test wait periods.
Take the Writing Sample! Challenge your English course placement by completing a Writing Sample administered in the IVC Assessment Center.
A writing sample cannot be completed until after taking your initial placement exam. If you choose not to complete the writing sample your next option is to wait 6 months after your initial assessment test to retake the exam. The Writing Sample is highly recommended. To sign up, click here.
Participate in Math Refresher! If you placed into Math 351 or Math 353, consider attending our 2-day Math Refresher to refresh your math skills and improve your IVC Math placement. Students see improvements after attending at least 3 topics and students who attend all 6 topics see the most improvement in their placement scores. Note: Math Refreshers are only offered to students that placed into Math 351 or Math 353.
