Placement Overview

You must attend an in-person orientation in order to receive placement in English and Math as part of your matriculation completion process. Irvine Valley College determines placement of English or Math in one of the following ways.

Attend Orientation

  1. Photo ID is required.
  2. Bring your unofficial high school transcript if you graduated from a high school in the United States.

If your first language is not English, you will take the English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment to clear the English placement requirement. ESL Assessments cannot be given during Placement Workshops*.​

OR​

Successful completion (final grade of A, B, C or Pass/Credit) of an appropriate English or Math course at an accredited college or university.

Review, complete and submit the IVC Request for Prerequisite Clearance form.

For student record security, forms are required to be sent from district issued email addresses only. Forms from other accounts will not be processed. District issued emails are "student_name@ivc.edu" or "student_name@saddleback.edu".

OR

Successful Completion of AP Exams in (English Literature, Composition, Calculus, and/or Statistics) with scores of 3 or higher.

Review, complete and submit the IVC Request for Prerequisite Clearance form.

It is required for you to first apply for admission to IVC before you satisfy any of the methods listed above. Speak with a counselor if you would like to challenge your math placement beyond transfer level math.
